What on earth are sludge lagoons?! They sound like something from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory!

If only! I’ve a suspicion that “sludge lagoon” may be the product of a heroic (if doomed) attempt at a rebranding exercise… Back in the 80s, I think that the more traditional name was still in use!
